After seeing their competitor's success with the 16-bit Sega Genesis game console in the late Eighties, Nintendo released their own 16-bit machine the Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems (aka SNES) in 1991 to challenge Sega from stealing its crown for the domination of the home video game console market in North America. The company previous release this system in Japan as "Super Famicom" in 1990 where it was an instant success, outselling its rival Sega. Despite launching with a small library of games (Super Mario World, F Zero, Sim City, Gradius III and Pilot wings), it's American counterpart SNES found equal success which lead the super system to be released into the European market in 1992 where it also dominated.
